What is Newarkcarbon.org?

Newarkcarbon is part of a network of citycarbon sites, with a mission of analyzing the carbon footprint of Newark and the surrounding area.

It is an effort to combine University research and community engagement to estimate and ultimately curb CO2 emissions. In this wiki based approach, we seek input from the community to estimate your own personal footprint and take steps towards a more sustainable living. The website serves as platform to inform the citizenry, help gather information and provide support in the effort to curb CO2 emissions.

Why CO2?

CO2 is the major greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming. Especially in urban centers, CO2 concentration is very high through traffic and high population density thus energy consumption. In order to effectively curb CO2 emissions, urban centers are the most logical place to start.

What is sustainability?

Sustainability is living within the means of your given environment. Humans have been emitting more CO2 than the plants and oceans are capable of taking up, thus humans went "beyond their means" of maintaining the climate in its previous state of the 19th century, before the industrial revolution. Sustainable living constitutes such an attempt to live within the means of the resources available – to be able to sustain.

Another crisis that humans are facing is access to fresh water as also resources have been depleted faster than being replenished. More info can be found under the links page.
